The Canada Caregiver Credit is one of the non-refundable tax credits, set up for caregivers to offer care for their spouse or common-law partner or children with physical or mental disabilities. This credit has been formed out of the amalgamation of three earlier benefits, i.e., Infirm Dependent Credit, Caregiver Credit, and Family Caregiver Credit.
Who qualifies for Canada Caregiver Credit?
To qualify for the CCC, you must meet the following criteria:
1. For Children or Grandchildren
You or your spouse’s child or grandchild must be dependent upon you for their daily basic needs such as shelter, food, and clothing. He or she must require substantially more care than others of comparable ages.
2. Other Relatives
Your spouse’s or common-law partner’s parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts, uncles, nieces, or nephews may also qualify for you if they reside in Canada and rely on your support for care.
How Much Can Be Claimed?
The level of support varies according to relationship status and situation:
Spouse/Common-Law Partner: You are eligible to claim $2,499 on line 30300 and up to $7,999 online 30425.
Eligible Dependent (18 or Older): $2,499 on line 30400 and $7,999 online 30425.
Dependent Under 18: $2,499 on line 30400 or line 30500.
Other Dependents (18 or Older): $7,999 online 30450.
How to Claim the CCC?
Step by Step,
1. Fill Schedule 5 for lines 30300, 30425, 30400, and 30450.
2. For line 30500, fill it in directly in your tax return.
Documents Needed
Medical Practitioner Statement: Description of when the disability started and estimated length of time.
For Children Under 18: The statement should indicate a lifetime of being reliant on others because of disability.
If the CRA already has a valid Disability Tax Credit Certificate (Form T2201), no further documentation is required.
